NY Winter Car Care Tips | New York Preowned Honda

Here at Bay Ridge Honda, we couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming months. The cold weather means holidays are here, and who doesn’t love sweater weather? We know just how important your family is to you and how far you go to ensure they’re safe and warm through the winter, but we wanted to remind you that your Brooklyn vehicle needs a little extra care as well. Read on for our quick and easy guide to keeping your car in the best shape possible during the winter.

First things first, check your battery. It’s much harder for it to run during the cold weather, and you do not want to be stranded on a long stretch of highway with a broken down vehicle and no heat! Have a volt test performed as soon as possible and if it’s not up to par, replace your battery.

Coolant levels are also extremely important in the winter. Also called antifreeze, this liquid prevents your engine from freezing over. Make sure your level is high enough and that you don’t have any cracks or leaks in your engine or radiator.

Next up: tires. If your car doesn’t automatically check your tire pressure and alert you when it gets low, make sure you have a tire gauge on hand at all times so that you can check it regularly. As the temperatures drop, you’ll lose more air, which could lead to tread separation, blow outs, and flats. You’ll also want to get them rotated regularly.

In order to keep yourself and all your passengers warm, have a professional take a look at your HVAC unit. Ensure that your defroster and climate control are running at full capacity.

This one may not seem as obvious, but keeping your gas tank as full as possible at all times will help prevent any water from freezing up within the fuel tank.
For visibility, keep an eye of your windshield wiper fluid as it can help break down frost and ice on your windshields. You’ll also want to check all of your lights and either have your headlights professionally cleaned if they’re starting to look foggy or get your own restoration kit.

Last but not least, it’s always a good idea to keep an emergency kit on hand. Pack things like water, nonperishable food items, flares, blankets, flashlight, jumper cables, first aid kit, and possibly even a charged disposable phone.

You can never be too safe when dealing with freezing temperatures, and here in New York the temperatures certainly do drop dramatically. For all your car needs, stop by Bay Ridge Honda today! We’d love to help you find the perfect car to get you through the winter and years to come.
